Meet SJ.

What does STRONG mean to you? [the word/feeling, not our brand]

The ability to put yourself out there, to put yourself in front of people, and you’re not afraid to fail, but you’re excited to exceed. It means resilience, understanding when you’re wrong, and celebrating when you’re right.

How did you discover Pilates, and what initially drew you to this form of exercise? Can you share how it has impacted your physical and mental well-being?

For the first half of my career, I had recurring issues with my groins and hamstrings, I found physically I couldn’t handle the demands of my job. I was encouraged to give Pilates a go to help strengthen the areas I was having issues with. Long story short, I haven’t looked back and wish I was introduced to it earlier. It’s been so good for my mental too, having confidence in my body allows me to attack what I need to without hesitation.

What has been the most memorable moment or achievement of your athletic career so far? Why does it stand out to you?

Easy. My debut for the Kiwis at Eden Park in 2012. Representing your country is in my eyes the pinnacle of our sport so to be able to do that at home with my family and friends in the stands was special.

What do you believe are the most important qualities for a leader to possess?

A leader who leads with action is to me the most important quality, it makes it easy to follow them. Walk the walk, before you talk the talk.

What role does goal-setting play in your game preparation and mindset?

It’s a massive contributing factor to where I want to take myself as a person and as an athlete. Having something to walk towards is so important, so setting something you can visibly see and refer to along the journey, certainly helps you achieve that.

If you could have a superpower for a day, what would it be and why?

To be Spider-Man, my daughter Millah is obsessed with him. If I was him then she’d think I’m the coolest person in the world.
